Page P.D. Demos Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) System

PAGE, AZ (January 23, 2017):The Page Police Department is currently testing an Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system on its new Chevy Tahoe patrol vehicle.

The mounted camera system essentially photographs vehicle license plates at an impressive rate (thousands per hour), scanning and matching plates contained in various governmental databases. Matches result in a “Hit” at which point the police officer is alerted by an alarm denoting an “attention-worthy” record has been found.  Record-matching comprises wanted fugitives, terror watch-listed individuals, AMBER Alert suspects, revoked/suspended licenses, and vehicle insurance information.  Pretty much any violation of law which is associated with vehicle registrations.
